Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

Do I need experience to join a class?
Not at all! We have several classes designed for beginners. REF Ground L1 and MAT Align are both great starting points for Pilates. Otherwise, you can jump into BARRE & Stretch, YOGA Hatha, or YOGA Stretch.

If you'd rather ease in one-on-one first, our Private Solo Trial ($90, 50 min) is a nice way to get familiar with the reformer before joining a group class - especially handy if you're pregnant, postpartum, recovering from an injury, or just getting back into working out after a long break.

NOTE: MAT, YOGA, BARRE and SOUND BATH classes are currently only available at our Fernvale studio.

What's the difference between Mat Pilates, Reformer Pilates, and Barre?

Reformer Pilates is done on the reformer machine, while Mat Pilates is done on just a mat. Props may be used in both classes to modify the exercise to make it more accessible, or progress the exercise to make it more challenging.

Neither Reformer nor Mat is harder or better, they're just different! On the reformer, the spring resistance can support you through some exercises, while the moving platform can make other exercises trickier by introducing instability. On the mat, you're managing your own bodyweight, which is simpler to set up but can be tougher on strength and control.

Barre is similar to Mat Pilates, but done at a faster pace, to music.

Is there a maximum age to join?

Not at all. We've had members in our private classes in their 80s, and members in our group classes in their 70s. Movement is for every stage of life.

Do I need to be fit or experienced to start?

Not at all! Most of our members join Root & Rise as absolute beginners and grow with consistency here. Everyone has to start somewhere!

Can I do Pilates/Yoga/Barre if I have chronic pain or a medical condition?
Please speak to us before booking your first class. Depending on what you're managing, we may suggest starting with a private class trial, so we can see how you respond and help you choose the right modifications. In some cases, we might recommend continuing with private sessions for a while before moving into a group class, so you get the most out of it when you do. If your condition needs diagnosis or is beyond our expertise, we'll gladly point you toward the right medical or clinical support.

Do you offer classes for pregnancy or postnatal recovery?

Yes. Prenatal clients can join at any point of pregnancy, as long as they've been cleared by their healthcare provider, no prior Pilates, Yoga, or Barre experience needed. Sound Bath sessions aren't available for prenatal clients. For postpartum clients, we recommend starting from 8 weeks after birth, provided you've been cleared to exercise by your doctor.

Booking & Packages

How do I book a class?
Classes open for booking 14 days in advance on Magic, though you can view the schedule up to 21 days ahead so you can plan around it. Booking closes 5 minutes before class starts, and popular slots fill up fast, so book early when you can: https://www.admin.yourmagic.co/booking-website/root8rise

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancel at least 12 hours before class to avoid losing credits. For prenatal/postnatal group classes, the window is 6 hours. Late cancellations or no-shows result in a credit deduction equivalent to the class you booked: 2 credits for group mat classes, 3 credits for group reformer classes, or 1 credit for private solos/duets/small groups.

If it's a genuine emergency, message us and we'll see what we can do.

NOTE: Classes may be cancelled if the minimum number of signups isn't met 12 hours before class starts (2 pax for reformer, 3 pax for any mat-based class) , so plan ahead if you have your heart set on a particular slot.

How does the waitlist work?

Here’s how it works:

  • If you're on the waitlist, keep an eye on your notifications!

  • If someone cancels >5 hours before class: the first person on waitlist will be automatically added to class.

  • If someone cancels <2 hours before class: you won’t be auto-bumped in and there won't be any notifications, but you can still jump in manually if you catch the slot (yes, this is where refreshing the page ninja-style comes in handy).

  • If you're auto-added from waitlist: it’s like you booked in, so if you need to cancel, make sure it’s still within the free cancellation (12 hours ahead of class) window to avoid a penalty.

  • In summary: If you are on waitlist, ensure you are available for class until you are dropped off the waitlist OR remove yourself from the waitlist >12 hours before the class if you will not be able to attend the class anymore.

Do you offer private sessions?
Yes, we do. We offer Private Solo (1:1), Private Duet (2:1), and other Private Small Group classes. Prices start from $90 per 50min trial session. Please drop us a WhatsApp for more information, or check out our available packages here.

Do you offer corporate classes and events?

Yes, we do! And we can do it at our studio, or bring our classes to your location of choice. Please speak to us on WhatsApp (81386011) for more information.

What to Expect

What should I wear or bring?

Grip socks are mandatory for Reformer and equipment classes, including private sessions, for hygiene and safety. You can purchase a pair at the studio if you don't have one yet.

We also recommend bringing a water bottle (we have a dispenser, so feel free to skip the disposables) and a small towel.

For Yoga and mat-based classes, mats are provided, but bring a mat towel if you tend to get slippery.

What is the studio etiquette?

Shoes off at the door, barefoot or grip socks only. Phones on silent, please step out quietly if you need to take a call. Be patient and kind, we're all just trying to move and feel better. We reserve the right to remove clients who are rude, unruly, or unsafe, to keep the space respectful for everyone, staff and instructors included.
